Botox and Dermal Fillers Q & A

What are Botox and dermal fillers?

Both Botox and dermal fillers are cosmetic treatments given by injection to temporarily reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles or add volume and structure to specific areas of your face.

Botox is made from the botulinum toxin, a form of highly purified bacteria, and it’s injected directly into the muscles responsible for lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injected just under the skin’s surface. They consist of various substances, many of which occur naturally in the body, depending on the type of flaw you’re having corrected.

How does Botox work?

Botox primarily corrects frown lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows as well as crow’s feet around the eyes.

When injected into a muscle, Botox blocks the nerve signals, preventing the muscle from contracting and creating wrinkles. Although you’ll still be able to make facial expressions, the wrinkles they cause will be reduced or may even disappear.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers correct wrinkles caused by sagging or thinning skin. When injected into wrinkle spaces, the filler adds volume to the skin, providing a fuller appearance. Additionally, a substance within the filler, called polylactic acid, promotes your body’s production of collagen.

Besides correcting facial wrinkles, dermal fillers can also correct or enhance other signs of aging, such as:

  • Thinning lips
  • Shallow facial areas
  • Under-eye shadows or wrinkles
  • Recessed scars

What can you expect from a Botox or dermal filler treatment?

Each procedure lasts about 10 minutes. You might feel a slight pinch, but ice or a topical anesthetic cream will relieve any discomfort. Although you might receive specific instructions for aftercare, you won’t need downtime. After your treatment, you can return to your normal activities.

While a Botox treatment typically lasts 3-4 months, dermal fillers can last up to a year or longer. You may repeat either treatment when desired.

Since Botox and dermal fillers are used on different areas of the face, they are sometimes used together in the same session. Marina Medispa offers three variations of Botox and 11 different types of dermal fillers for your specific needs.
